National Curriculum Objectives

Mathematics Year 3: (3C6) Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables

Mathematics Year 4: (4C6a) Recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12

Mathematics Year 4: (4C2) Add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using the formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction where appropriate

Mathematics Year 4: (4F4) Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator

About this Resource

This resource is designed to be used individually or in pairs. Pupils are required to solve the calculations provided in order to crack the code for each Christmas related word. Discussion of possible strategies is encouraged.

Christmas Code Cracker 1 – using multiplication and division with the 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 times tables and addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers.

Christmas Code Cracker 2 – using multiplication and division with the 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 times tables, addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers and addition of fractions with the same denominator.

Christmas Code Cracker 3 – using multiplication and division with all times tables up to 12 x 12, addition and subtraction of 2-digit numbers and addition and subtraction of fractions with the same denominator.

We recommend self or peer marking using the answer page provided to promote discussion and self-correction.
