This EYFS Activities Around the Christmas Tree Provision Enhancement resource includes a range of maths activities for younger learners to enjoy. Pupils will be able to practise a range of skills such as counting, ordering numbers, measuring, positional language, sorting and shape recognition all with a Christmas theme. Each card includes helpful advice as well as questions that could be asked to prompt discussion.

It covers the following objectives for children in reception:

Count objects, actions and sounds
Count beyond ten
Compare length, weight and capacity

Curriculum Objectives

  • Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number
  • Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5
  • Automatically recall (without reference to rhymes, counting or other aids) number bonds up to 5 (including subtraction facts) and some number bonds to 10, including double facts
  • There is no Early Learning Goal for shape, space and measures, but it is important that the curriculum includes rich opportunities for children to develop their spatial reasoning skills across all areas of mathematics
