Combine the theme of 'people who help us' with number with our EYFS Guess How Many Learning Activity. This resource enables children to develop the skills of estimating and subitising by encouraging pupils to guess how many images they can see, for example 'six nurses'. The adult should allow children to quickly see the image before hiding the card to prevent children from being able to count! Children shout out their guesses, or record on whiteboards, before the adult turns the card over to reveal the numeral. Children compare their estimate to the actual number of objects.

It covers the following objectives for children in reception:

(M-22) Subitise.

(M-23) Link the number symbol (numeral) with its cardinal number value.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number
  • Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5
  • Automatically recall (without reference to rhymes, counting or other aids) number bonds up to 5 (including subtraction facts) and some number bonds to 10, including double facts
