Phase 2 Phonics Caption Matching

Worksheet
An image of the Phase 2 Phonics Caption Matching Resource

Give children the opportunity to practise their knowledge of Phase 2 Phonics using this EYFS Phase 2 Phonics Caption Matching resource.

This phonics activity enables children to develop their early reading skills by blending letter sounds together to read words and then reading these words in simple captions. Children are encouraged to identify which of the three images matches the caption and cut it out using appropriate scissors. Children then stick the chosen image in the box.

Ideal for use in small groups within class, this resource is versatile and can be used in lots of different ways. That decision of course, is entirely yours!

  • (L-8) Blend sounds into words, so that they can read short words made up of known letter sound correspondences.
  • (L-10) Read a few common exception words matched to the schools phonic programme.
  • (L-11) Read simple phrases and sentences made up of words with known letter sound correspondences and, where necessary, a few exception words.

Early Learning Goal

  • Say a sound for each letter in the alphabet and at least 10 digraphs;
  • Read words consistent with their phonic knowledge by sound-blending;
  • Read aloud simple sentences and books that are consistent with their phonic knowledge, including some common exception words.
