You can use this resource as an independent activity in class or in a teacher-led small group. Alternatively, this could be placed in a provision area for children to access, or given as a homework task.
Children in Reception
(L-8) Blend sounds into words, so that they can read short words made up of known letter sound correspondences.
(L-10) Read a few common exception words matched to the schools phonic programme.
(L-11) Read simple phrases and sentences made up of words with known lettersound correspondences and, where necessary, a few exception words.
Early Learning Goal
- Say a sound for each letter in the alphabet and at least 10 digraphs;
- Read words consistent with their phonic knowledge by sound-blending;
- Read aloud simple sentences and books that are consistent with their phonic knowledge, including some common exception words.
Advice and Ideas:
This phonics activity enables children to develop their reading skills by blending letter sounds together to read words and then reading these words in simple captions. Children are encouraged to identify which of the three images matches the caption and cut it out using appropriate scissors. Children stick the chosen image in the box.
