National Curriculum Objectives:

English Year 1: Introduction to capital letters to demarcate sentences

English Year 1 Beginning to punctuate sentences using a full stop

English Year 2: Learning how to use both familiar and new punctuation correctly (see English appendix 2) including: commas for lists

English Year 3: Introduction to inverted commas to punctuate direct speech

English Year 4: Use commas after fronted adverbials

English Year 5: Using commas to clarify meaning or avoid ambiguity in writing
