What's included in the Technology Through Time History at Home resource and why is it useful?

KS1 Technology Through Time History at Home is a one-page activity sheet to send home to parents and carers at the start of the topic. It includes what children will be learning, great conversation starters, ideas to try at home, famous figures to explore and places to find out more, covering how everyday technology has changed within living memory.

What's on the sheet?

Learning: how everyday technology has changed over the past 70 years, how people used to cook, clean, communicate, travel and learn, changes within living memory and how technology might change in the future.

Conversation starters: questions such as "What kinds of technology didn't exist when your grandparents were children?" and "What invention has made the biggest difference to our lives?"

Ideas to try at home: a then and now hunt, interviewing a family member, a weekend without tech challenge and designing a future invention.

Famous figures: Alexander Graham Bell, Tim Berners-Lee, Mary Jackson and Ada Lovelace, with dates and a line on each.

Books and websites: Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty, The Story of Inventions (Usborne), BBC Bitesize KS1 History and the Science Museum online collection.

How do our History at Home resources work?

Our History at Home resources sit alongside our history scheme. Send them home to parents and carers at the start of each topic to promote learning at home without it being a taxing homework-style resource. They also help parents build their own knowledge of the topic, so they can connect with what their child is learning in school.

Teach the full unit with our six Technology Through Time lessons.
