Human Geography
This KS1 geography unit introduces children to the physical features of the Lake District, developing secure understanding of mountains, lakes, rivers, valleys and waterfalls while strengthening key vocabulary and simple map skills. Pupils learn that the Lake District is a National Park in Cumbria, explore why people visit it, and compare its physical features with those found in their own local area through structured geographical enquiry. Lessons focus on locating the Lake District, identifying famous physical features, and comparing places, with geography capital woven throughout to help children understand how physical and human features shape daily life. Key vocabulary—including mountain, lake, river, valley and waterfall—is reinforced across the unit, supported by clear misconceptions and curriculum links that ensure accurate, confident teaching and smooth progression into LKS2 geography.
