This KS1 What is a Compass? Fieldwork PPT introduces children to the compass as a basic navigation tool, helping them understand directions such as North, South, East and West.

It helps pupils begin to understand how we describe direction and location in geography. The PPT uses simple and engaging mnemonics such as 'Naughty Elephants Squirt Water' to help children remember the order of the compass points.

The accompanying Label the Compass worksheet supports this learning by giving children a chance to practise identifying and labelling the main directions on a compass.
