This KS1 What the Ladybird Heard Writing Unit resource contains a model text of a retelling of a story. This can be explored with your children as a good example of what you might expect them to write. Give children time to look at the model text, analyse the vocabulary used and the sentence structure. What elements might they want to use in their own writing?

Then pupils can then use the writing frame to create their own story retelling. Pupils may want to write out a first draft in their books and use this worksheet for a final copy to be proudly presented on the wall. Encourage children to use all the ideas, vocabulary and editing techniques they have learnt to produce a high-quality piece of writing.

The teaching PowerPoint for this writing unit also provides a blank writing frame for you to model writing techniques and what a writer’s thought process might be. It could also be where you do a shared write to guide and inspire writers.
