Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day Whole School Assembly PowerPoint is a slideshow that explains why people wear poppies in November and why we remember those involved in wars and conflicts of the past. The content includes 10 slides, covering the poppy as the symbol of remembrance, the first verse of John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields, how the Royal British Legion sells poppies to support the Armed Forces, why remembrance matters, why Remembrance Day is held on 11th November, Remembrance Day customs and ideas for further learning. It links to the KS1 and KS2 history curriculum.
Why poppies became the symbol of remembrance after growing on the battlefields of World War One, alongside John McCrae's poem and the question "Why do you think a poppy was chosen?"
Why the armistice was signed on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month and how people mark the day with wreaths, services and a two-minute silence, asking "Do you remember ever having taken part in a two-minute silence?"
Three follow-up ideas: creating poppy-themed artwork, finding out about Remembrance customs in your local area and writing a poem about the significance of poppies.
Our whole school assemblies are PowerPoint slideshows that follow a similar structure: an introduction, questions to get children thinking, the key points of the topic and reflection time. They're paced to suit a primary school assembly and work best on a whiteboard, projected out to the hall. You can use them:
The majority of our assemblies include teacher notes and guidance to support delivery, and because they're pacey, you can adapt them to however long your assembly lasts.
Every assembly is editable, so you can add, remove or change slides to suit the needs of your school. We cover religious events, seasonal topics, values such as kindness, friendship and tolerance, science, history, PSHE, music, significant people and sporting events, so you can choose the assemblies that fit your school year.
Families can carry the conversation on at home by asking children about their assembly: what they heard, how it made them feel and what they think about it.
