Use this Y5 Compare Negative Numbers Reasoning and Problem Solving resource to give your class another opportunity to compare positive and negative numbers.

The first question is a problem solving question which requires children to find more than one way to arrange positive and negative number cards in order to make comparison statements correct. The second and third questions are reasoning questions which ask them to decide whether a statement is correct and explain their thinking using mathematical language. All three questions have two similar parts to promote confidence.

An answer sheet is provided for teachers and pupils who are self marking.

A varied fluency resource is also available for this small step.
