This is the Year 1 Addition and Subtraction within 10 block assessment. It follows the White Rose Maths small steps for the block and matches our Teaching PowerPoints and worksheets for those steps.

There are 8 short questions over two pages, each checking one key skill: part-whole models, number sentences, number bonds to 10, adding more, finding a part, taking away, subtracting on a number line and fact families.

The questions use simple, decodable language and the same visuals children use in lessons (counting bears, ten frames, part-whole models, number lines), so the assessment checks the maths rather than reading or unfamiliar layouts.

Each question has a matching practical activity with “You need”, “Say” and “Look for” prompts. Teachers can assess through written work, hands-on activities or both. It can be run one-to-one, which suits children with SEND or EAL, or in small groups to save time.

Answer pages, Secure, Developing and Emerging descriptors and a Child Record Sheet make marking and judgements quick and consistent, and help teachers plan next steps.
