Reasoning and Problem Solving

There are two are questions for children to complete.

• Q1: Reasoning – spot and explain that Ella has added the numbers together instead of finding the missing part.

• Q2: Problem Solving – use number cards to complete two part-whole models where one part is 4.

Our reasoning and problem solving resources work best alongside our teaching PowerPoints, which walk you through the whole lesson along with other lesson resources that you can find on our Find a Part lesson page. It can also be used to follow-up the Adult-Led Practical Activities resource, which includes questions that can be adapted to suit the needs of individual learners, helping you to meet each child where they are at to ensure progress for every child, not just the average child.

• After completing the Varied Fluency worksheet, children are now ready for their Reasoning and Problem Solving work.

• Children can complete the Reasoning and Problem Solving worksheet or deepen and apply their knowledge within the Continuous Provision.

• The Reasoning and Problem Solving worksheet can be accessed independently or with adult support.

• Within the PowerPoint, the final slide poses a Real Life Problem relating to the concept of parts and wholes, which provides opportunities for deeper discussion and more complex discussion.

• Across all Year 1 maths resources, challenge is also provided through adult questioning and reasoning rather than levelled tasks, in line with mastery principles.
