What's included in the Recognise and Name 3D Shapes Adult-Led Practical Activities resource and why is it useful?

Year 1 Recognise and Name 3D Shapes Adult-Led Practical Activities resource provides planning for setting up tasks using everyday classroom objects. There are two main activities which match the questions on the Varied Fluency resource. The second Why not try... page provides three extra opportunities for children to engage in the learning.

Each activity has Core, Support and Stretch questions which have been carefully designed to help you meet each child where they are at, to ensure progress for every child, not just the average child. These questions can be adapted to suit the needs of individual learners. Each practical activity covers how to recognise and name common 3D shapes.

This resource includes:

Recognise and Name 3D Shapes Practical Activities

• Activity 1: Feely Bag. Children feel a hidden shape, describe it and guess its name.

• Activity 2: Shape Towers. Children build towers with 3D shapes and name each shape they use.

You will need:

• a set of 3D shapes and a feely bag (or pillowcase)

• everyday objects, e.g. boxes, tins, balls, tubes and party hats

• building blocks in different shapes and sizes

Why not try…

• Junk Model Robots - Children build a robot with junk items and name the 3D shape of each part.

• Shape Hunt - Give children shape name cards. They hunt around the classroom or outdoors for objects that match.

• What’s Missing? - Set out some 3D shapes and everyday objects on a tray and name them together. Cover the tray, take one away, then ask children which shape is missing.

How do our adult-led practical activities resources work?

Our Adult-Led Practical Activities resources work best alongside our teaching PowerPoints, which walk you through the whole lesson along with other lesson resources that you can find on our Recognise and Name 3D Shapes lesson page. It can be used alongside or in combination with the teaching PowerPoint.

These practical activities:

• Provide opportunities for teaching, to explore the concept and experience it through concrete resources.

• Are suitable for completion in small groups or whole class teaching.

• Are flexible with a choice of two activities and thinking questions that are ‘levelled’ for the teacher to use with different groups of children.

• Provide extension through the ‘Why not try…’ activities page – these could be done with the children or to set up in the continuous provision area whilst working with groups of children.
