This Year 2 Addition and Subtraction Mistake Investigators resource offers a variety of carefully structured questions designed to strengthen children’s reasoning and problem-solving skills by identifying and explaining mistakes.
Each objective includes four questions: one correct answer and three incorrect options. Children are encouraged to spot the mistakes, decide which answer is correct and explain their thinking.
The questions are intended for group work, to spark discussion and collaborative learning. - Add and subtract numbers using concrete objects and pictorial representations, including: a two-digit number and ones; a two-digit number and tens; two two-digit numbers; adding three one-digit numbers
- Recognise and use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and use this to check calculations and missing number problems
- Solve problems with addition and subtraction using concrete objects and pictorial representations, including those involving numbers, quantities and measures; and by applying their increasing knowledge of mental and written methods
- Show that addition of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and subtraction of one number from another cannot
