Support children in applying their knowledge of division with this engaging Year 2 Divide by 2 reasoning and problem solving resource. We've created two different problem solving style questions and a reasoning style question for children to get to grips with. There are two examples of each question type to help consolidate children's learning too. This resource has been differentiated three ways, so we are sure there is something for all learners. Below is a brief outline of how the differentiation differs according to the level of challenge:

Developing: Questions to support dividing numbers by 2 in one-step problems with pictorial support.

Expected: Questions to support dividing numbers by 2 in one-step problems with no pictorial support given.

Greater Depth: Questions to support dividing numbers by 2 in one-step and some two-step problems with no pictorial support given.

Use this resource as an independent learning task or allow children to work in pairs or small groups to encourage mathematical language to develop as they navigate each question. We've included a handy answer sheet to speed up marking or this could be used as a peer or self marking tool.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division within the multiplication tables and write them using the multiplication (×), division (÷) and equals (=) signs
  • Solve problems involving multiplication and division, using materials, arrays, repeated addition, mental methods, and multiplication and division facts, including problems in contexts
