This Year 3 Autumn 1 Baseline Assessment is designed to assess understanding of spelling objectives covered during this term when following our suggested spelling sequence.

Presented in a format similar to that used in formal assessments to build familiarity with those, this assessment can be used as a baseline at the start of the half-term or as an assessment at the end of the half-term. With a teacher script, guidance and a detailed grid explaining which objective each spelling links to and when it's covered during this half-term, this download covers your spelling assessment needs!

Spelling objectives covered in this baseline assessment:

  • S5: Adding ‘-s’ or ‘-es’ to words

  • S6: Adding ‘–ing’, ‘–ed’ or ‘–er’ to verbs, with no spelling change

  • S7: Adding ‘–er’ or ‘–est’ to adjectives, with no spelling change

  • S34 Pack 1: The suffix ‘–ly’

  • S34 Pack 2: The suffix ‘–ful’

  • S34 Pack 3: The suffix ‘–less’


Curriculum Objectives

  • adding –s and –es to words (plural of nouns and the third-person singular of verbs)
  • adding the endings –ing, –ed and –er to verbs where no change is needed in the root word
  • adding –er and –est to adjectives where no change is needed in the root word
  • the suffixes –ment, –ness, –ful, –less and –ly
