Use this Year 4 Calculate Perimeter of a Rectangle Reasoning and Problem Solving resource to provide problem solving opportunities for children who are developing confidence when calculating the perimeter of a rectangle.
The first two questions are reasoning problems which require children to think carefully about their method for finding the perimeter and check whether a solution to a problem is correct. Common mistakes such as not including all measurements, finding the area instead of the perimeter or not converting units of measurement are targeted in these questions. In the third question, children are asked to work out multiple solutions to a problem. This encourages flexibility and resilience in their mathematical thinking.
There are two similar parts to each question to promote confidence and an answer sheet is provided for teachers, and children who are marking their own work.
A varied fluency resource is also available for this small step.
