This Year 4 Multiply 2 Digits by 1 Digit (Informal) Reasoning and Problem Solving resource will encourage your pupils to apply their understanding of informal multiplication methods.

Using a variety of visual representations - place value counters, a part-whole model, number pieces and a number line - pupils are asked to check answers and explain them and, in the third question, solve a multiplication problem with various possible answers.

An answer sheet is provided for busy teachers to help with marking and for pupils to mark their own work.

A reasoning and problem solving resource is also available for this small step.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Solve problems involving multiplying and adding, including using the distributive law to multiply two digit numbers by one digit, integer scaling problems and harder correspondence problems such as n objects are connected to m objects
