This Year 4 Multiply 2 Digits by 1 Digit (Informal) Varied Fluency resource will encourage your pupils to understand the process of multiplication before going on to learn a written method in the next step. Using three different visual representations - place value counters, a number line and a part-whole model - they are given repeated opportunities to see what is happening at each step of the calculation.

An answer sheet is provided for busy teachers to help with marking and for pupils to mark their own work.

A reasoning and problem solving resource is also available for this small step.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Solve problems involving multiplying and adding, including using the distributive law to multiply two digit numbers by one digit, integer scaling problems and harder correspondence problems such as n objects are connected to m objects
