Use this Year 5 Add Whole Numbers with More Than Four Digits resource to assess what your children already know about adding 4-digit numbers.

This resource includes six different questions in total, and requires children to use their knowledge and understanding of addition to complete three varied fluency questions before moving on to applying this knowledge to one reasoning and two problem-solving questions.

Ideal for use as a pre-assessment task, this activity is versatile in its uses and could be used as part of small group work to help support those children who may be struggling. Similarly, it could be sent home as a revision task before moving on.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using the formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction where appropriate
  • Estimate and use inverse operations to check answers to a calculation
  • Solve addition and subtraction two-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why
