Are you looking for a clear and concise resource to teach children how to find the area of compound shapes? Look no further than our Year 5 Area of Compound Shapes Teaching PPT.

The resource begins with an activity to practise finding the area of a shape by counting squares, followed by a reminder of area and rectilinear/compound shapes. Pupils are guided through the process of splitting a rectilinear shape into smaller rectangles, adding the area of smaller rectangles together and calculating the missing length in order to find the area. There is an opportunity to check understanding after each step.

A reasoning and problem solving question at the end of the resource will stretch children's understanding, help children to think more deeply about their learning and prepare them for independent work.

This resource can be used for whole-class or small-group teaching. The final slide gives links to our other resources in this small step.
