Our Year 5 Perimeter of Rectilinear Shapes Teaching PPT is the ideal resource to show children how to calculate the perimeter of rectilinear shapes.
The PowerPoint follows on smoothly from the previous step of finding the perimeter of rectangles, to more complex rectilinear shapes. The resource begins with a clear recap of a rectilinear shape. Then, pupils are guided through the process of adding known sides together to find the perimeter, calculating the length of missing sides and finding the perimeter when some sides are not labelled. There is an opportunity to check understanding after each step.
A reasoning and problem solving question at the end of the resource will stretch children's understanding, help children to think more deeply about their learning and prepare them for independent work.
This resource can be used for whole-class or small-group teaching. The final slide gives links to our other resources in this small step.
