This Year 5 Estimate Capacity resource has been designed to extend and develop your class's thinking. The task comes in the form of a discussion problem, which encourages children to work collaboratively and to discuss the problem using a systematic approach and mathematical language. So once comfortable estimating capacity, set them off in a pair or in groups and really get them thinking. A handy answer sheet is provided so that children can self-mark or use the answer to prompt more discussion.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Estimate volume [for example, using 1 cm3 blocks to build cuboids (including cubes)] and capacity [for example, using water]
  • Use all four operations to solve problems involving measure [for example, money] using decimal notation, including scaling
