This Year 5 How Do Mechanisms Make Life Easier? Investigation Lesson will introduce children to a variety of simple machines. They will learn how levers, pulleys and gears work and sort examples from everyday life according to their mechanisms.

There is an opportunity to investigate an area of interest, with an example focusing on the impact of a lever's length. This leads to chances to record predictions, findings and conclusions, plus follow-up questions and assessments.

This lesson makes frequent links to everyday life to make learning engaging and relevant.

National Curriculum Objectives:

  • Recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have a greater effect.
