This Year 5 Properties of Shape Mistake Investigators includes a range of reasoning and problem solving style questions that are similar to questions children could encounter in assessments. The questions are designed to be answered in groups to promote discussion and development of reasoning skills.

The questions cover seven properties of shape objectives to test children's understanding of how to use the properties of rectangles to deduce facts, distinguish between regular and irregular polygons, identify 3D sapes, know angles are measured in degrees, identify angles, draw angles and use reflection and translation.
Twenty-eight questions are included across seven sheets of A4, with one sheet per objective. Answers are also included!

If you're looking for something that will help your children develop their skills and help them to become more investigative learners, you're in the right place.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Use the properties of rectangles to deduce related facts and find missing lengths and angles
  • Distinguish between regular and irregular polygons based on reasoning about equal sides and angles
  • Identify 3-D shapes, including cubes and other cuboids, from 2-D representations
  • Know angles are measured in degrees: estimate and compare acute, obtuse and reflex angles
  • Identify angles at a point and one whole turn (total 360), angles at a point on a straight line and 1/2 a turn (total 180 ) and other multiples of 90
  • Draw given angles, and measure them in degrees
  • Identify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a reflection or translation, using the appropriate language, and know that the shape has not changed
