Let your class apply their knowledge of subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with this Year 5 Subtract from a Mixed Number Discussion Problem. This resource includes two in-depth questions for children to explore their knowledge of fractions and apply their understanding too. The first question includes a familiar context and clues for children to negotiate. The second question is more abstract however, both questions can be used multiple times due to the potential various outcomes. We would recommend children tackling this resource when they have a great understanding of the objectives covered.

You could use this in multiple ways too. It can be used at the end of the lesson as a small group or paired activity, you could display one question on the screen and discuss potential outcomes as a whole class to encourage mathematical thinking and use of language, or this could be given as a homework activity to those who are have shown the greatest understanding. We've included an example answer for each question for children to compare their outcomes with.
