Give children the opportunity to apply their understanding of rules for two-step missing number problems by downloading our Year 6 2-Step Function Machines reasoning and problem solving worksheet. This resource contains two problem-solving style questions and one reasoning style question with two of each type per worksheet. We have included three levels of differentiation in this resource and below is a brief outline of how we've differentiated each level of challenge to suit your children's abilities:
Developing: Questions use whole numbers only.
Expected: Use of all four operations and where an input or output may be a decimal number or a negative number.
Greater Depth: Use of all four operations where an input or output may be a decimal number, a negative number, fraction or a mixed number. Functions may include decimal numbers.
Use this resource as an independent learning activity following on from our varied fluency worksheet within the same lesson group. Alternatively, this could be used in a small group situation to encourage the use of mathematical thinking and applying reasoning and problem solving language to these questions. A fully explained sheet with modelled answers is provided to ease marking for you.
