National Curriculum Objectives

Mathematics Year 1: Recognise and use language relating to dates, including days of the week
Mathematics Year 1: Tell the time to the hour and half past the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times
Mathematics Year 2: Tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times
Mathematics Year 3: Tell and write the time from an analogue clock, including using Roman numerals from I to XII, and 12-hour and 24-hour clocks
Mathematics Year 3: Estimate and read time with increasing accuracy to the nearest minute; record and compare time in terms of seconds, minutes and hours; use vocabulary such as o’clock, a.m./p.m., morning, afternoon, noon and midnight
Mathematics Year 4: Read, write and convert time between analogue and digital 12- and 24-hour clocks
Mathematics Year 4: Solve problems involving converting from hours to minutes; minutes to seconds; years to months; weeks to days
Mathematics Year 5: Solve problems involving converting between units of time
Mathematics Year 5: Complete, read and interpret information in tables, including timetables

Differentiation:

Beginner Work out the day the train leaves by knowing days before and after; add hands of the clocks of ‘o’clock’ and ‘half-past’. Aimed at Year 1 Secure/Year 2 Emerging.

Easy Add hands of clocks, read analogue times, complete a simple timetable – all to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour. Aimed at Year 2 Secure/Year 3 Emerging.

Tricky Add hands on clocks using Roman numerals, 12-hour and 24-hour clocks; read time to the nearest minute; order times; complete missing times on a timetable. Aimed at Year 3 Secure/Year 4 Emerging.

Expert Add hands to clock faces, using am/pm and 24-hour; converting from hours to minutes. Aimed at Year 4 Secure/Year 5 Emerging.

Brainbox Add times for 12-hour and 24-hour; answer questions using information from the timetable. Aimed at Year 5 Secure.
