Shopping on a Budget

Six differentiated activities to help children to learn how to stay within a budget and spend as little money as possible by comparing and calculating prices between supermarkets and finding the best deals.

National Curriculum Objectives
Mathematics Y2: S​olve simple pro​blems in a practical context involving addition and subtraction of money of the same unit, including giving change
Mathematics Y​3: Add a​​nd subtract amounts of money to give change, using b​​​oth £ and p in practical contexts
Mathematics Y​4:​​ Estimate, compare an​​d calculate different measures, including money in pounds and pence​​
Mathematics Y​5:​​ ​U​​​se all four operations to solve problems involving measure [for example, len​gth, mass, volume, money] using decimal notation, including scaling
Mathematics Y​6:​ ​Solve problems involving the calculation of percentages [for example, o​​​f measures, and such as 15% of 360] and the use of percentages for comparison

Differentiation:

Beginner 6 shopping items on the list, 3 store prices to compare. Adding amounts worth less than £1 and calculating simple differences. Aimed at Year 2 Developing.

Easy 6 shopping items on the list, 4 store prices to compare. Adding amounts worth less than £1, finding differences and calculating change from £1. Aimed at Year 2 Secure/Year 3 Emerging.

Tricky 8 shopping items on the list​, 4 store prices to compare. Converting amounts from pence to pounds, adding amounts worth less than £1, finding differences and calculating change from £5. Aimed at Year 3 Secure/Year 4 Emerging.​​

Expert 8 Shopping items on the list, 4 store prices to compare. Adding amounts worth between £1 and £2, finding differences and calculating change. Problems requiring multiplication and division. Aimed at Year 4 Secure/Year 5 Emerging.​​

Brainbox 10 Shopping items on the list, 5 store prices to compare. Adding amounts worth less than £5, finding differences and calculating change from £50.​ Problems requiring multiplication and division, including some 2-step problems. Aimed at Year 5 Secure/Year 6 Emerging.​​

Genius 10 Shopping items on the list, 5 store prices to compare. Adding amounts worth less than £5.​ Problems requiring use of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.​ 2-step problems including calculation percentages and mean amounts.​ Aimed at Year 6 Secure.​​​
