National Curriculum Objectives

  • We recommend teaching the terminology of verb in Year 1 so that children understand the difference between the word types and the jobs that they have within sentences. The resources for this step will include the terminology of verb.

Differentiation for Year 1 Verbs:

Varied Fluency
Developing Questions to support identifying verbs. Questions use CVC, CCVC and/or CVCC words.
Expected Questions to support identifying verbs. Questions use high frequency or phonetically decodable words.
Greater Depth Questions to support identifying verbs, including irregular verbs. Questions use some words which are not easily decodable.

Application and Reasoning
Questions 1, 4 and 7 (Application)
Developing Correct the list of words so that they are all verbs. Questions use CVC, CCVC and/or CVCC words.
Expected Correct the list of words so that they are all verbs. Questions use high frequency or phonetically decodable words.
Greater Depth Correct the list of words so that they are all verbs. Questions use some irregular verbs and some words which are not easily decodable.
