National Fieldwork Fortnight runs from the 3rd June to 15th June. If you knew that, gold star! If you didn’t, I think that’s ok. It’s summer term, SATs are done, report writing is done/in full-swing/looming and you’ve enough to think about.

That it might be lost in the periphery is no real surprise. Fieldwork within geography doesn’t get much of a look in. But, BUT! It’s our most requested geography resource, so there’s plenty of you out there that see it’s value and have a desire to help children get hands-on with geography. That’s even more important, because fieldwork is the best way to not only see geography in action, but to develop valuable skills in observation, collecting data and drawing conclusions.

Now, there are a few barriers to undertaking fieldwork in school – the time taken to set up, the need for risk assessments, the need to step out of your comfort zone as a teacher when you’ve already a million things to do. So we’ve tried to make it a little easier for you. We have standalone fieldwork experiments or week-long observations – whatever suits your needs – and, currently, the majority of our offerings can be done within the school grounds (so no Health and Safety forms). Not only do we have a PPT to guide you through, we’ve also included recording sheets and where necessary, methods that can be printed out for children to follow. All you need to supply is some basic equipment (where possible, part of the lessons include children making their own instruments to conduct experiments).

Online, we have the in-depth Weather Diary units, but we also have some Water Cycle fieldwork experiments, Transport fieldwork and more, so be sure to check it out! And good luck inspiring your class with a love of geography.
