National Curriculum Objectives

English Year 2: Proofreading to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation (for example, ends of sentences punctuated correctly)
English Year 3 & Year 4: Evaluate and edit by proposing changes to grammar and vocabulary to improve consistency, including the accurate use of pronouns in sentences
English Year 5 & Year 6: Evaluate and edit by proposing changes to vocabulary, grammar and punctuation to enhance effects and clarify meaning
English Year 3 & Year 4: Proofread for spelling and punctuation errors
English Year 5 & Year 6: Proofread for spelling and punctuation errors
English Year 5 & Year 6: Evaluate and edit by ensuring the consistent and correct use of tense throughout a piece of writing
English Year 5 & Year 6: Evaluate and edit by ensuring correct subject and verb agreement when using singular and plural, distinguishing between the language of speech and writing and choosing the appropriate register

Differentiation:

Beginner Editing could include using capital letters, adding full stops and correcting common mistakes in spelling from the first 100 high frequency words. Aimed at Year 2 Developing.

Easy Editing could include using capital letters, adding full stops, question marks or exclamation marks, correcting simple verb tenses and common mistakes in spelling from the first 100 High Frequency Words. Aimed at Year 2 Secure/Year 3 Emerging.

Tricky Editing could include using capital letters, full stops, question marks or exclamation marks, inverted commas for speech, commas to separate a list, identifying omitted words, correcting simple verb tenses and common mistakes in spelling from the next 200 high frequency words, wrong use of homophones, including using apostrophes for contracted forms. Aimed at Year 3 Secure/Year 4 Emerging.

Expert Editing could include using capital letters, full stops, question marks or exclamation marks, inverted commas for speech, commas in a list or after fronted adverbials, identifying omitted words or words written in the wrong order, correcting verb tenses and common mistakes in spelling from the next 200 high frequency words and spellings where the wrong phoneme has been used, wrong homophone, including using apostrophes for contracted and possessive forms. Aimed at Year 4 Secure/Year 5 Emerging.

Brainbox Editing could include using capital letters, full stops, question marks or exclamation marks, inverted commas for speech, commas in a list, after fronted adverbials, dashes, brackets or commas to indicate parenthesis, identifying omitted words or words written in the wrong order, correcting verb tenses and common mistakes in trickier words, including using apostrophes for contracted and possessive forms. Aimed at Year 5 Secure/Year 6 Emerging.

Genius Editing could include using capital letters, full stops, question marks or exclamation marks, inverted commas for speech and quotes, commas in a list, after fronted adverbials, dashes, brackets or commas to indicate parenthesis, colons, semi-colons, ellipsis, identifying omitted words or words written in the wrong order, correcting verb tenses and common mistakes in trickier words, including using apostrophes for contracted and possessive forms. Aimed at Year 6 Secure.
