This Goodnight Mister Tom Chapter 5 Comprehension has differentiated questions and activities to be used in a Whole Class Reading session based on the first chapter of the popular novel by Michelle Magorian. In Chapter 5, Tom and Willie attend the Sunday morning Church service along with many of the other residents of the village - some we have met in previous chapters and some new faces. The vicar turns on the wireless at the end of the service and the congregation hear the announcement from Chamberlain that Britain is officially at war with Germany. After the service, Tom, Willie, Mr Fletcher and his two sons set to work digging a trench and building an Anderson shelter in Tom's back garden. Throughout the chapter, Willie thinks about his previous experiences with his mother, and also wondering where the curly-haired boy from the post office is.
