Our themed EYFS Estimate and Count to 5 Learning Activity enables children to develop their understanding of estimating. Practitioners should discuss how to make sensible estimates by using their knowledge of quantities. If required, supporting adults may need to write the numerals for the children or small number cards could be used. Children then identify how many objects there are by counting. Please be aware that if children are able to subitise the amount to 5 this should be encouraged.

It covers the following objectives for children in reception:

(M-21) Count objects, actions and sounds.

(M-22) Subitise.

(M-23) Link the number symbol (numeral) with its cardinal number value.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number
  • Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5
  • Automatically recall (without reference to rhymes, counting or other aids) number bonds up to 5 (including subtraction facts) and some number bonds to 10, including double facts
