This EYFS Counting Irregular Arrangements to 5 Learning Activity enables children to count up to 5 objects in irregular arrangements. Children count each set of objects and represent the number in the table provided. Encourage children to count systematically by pointing at and giving one number name to at each object in turn. Alternatively, children can place a counter on each image or cross out the images as they count. In other areas of the classroom, allow for the children to count and work with groups of objects, for example dominoes, small world objects, natural materials in the outdoor area, stones/ pebbles in the sand tray.

It covers the following objectives for children in reception:

(M-21) Count objects, actions and sounds.

(M-23) Link the number symbol (numeral) with its cardinal number value.


Curriculum Objectives

  • Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number
  • Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5
  • Automatically recall (without reference to rhymes, counting or other aids) number bonds up to 5 (including subtraction facts) and some number bonds to 10, including double facts
