Explore subtraction through different themes with our EYFS Subtracting Numbers to 10 Learning Activity. This resource enables children to create their own subtraction calculations. Image cards need to be cut up separately whilst the number sentence frame can be kept in a strip. Children are required to select two picture cards, decide which number needs to go first in their calculation and then work out the answer. Children may use concrete resources to support them so that they can physically take away.

It covers the following objectives for children in reception:

(M-23) Link the number symbol (numeral) with its cardinal number value.

(M-27) Explore the composition of numbers to 10.

(M-28) Automatically recall number bonds for numbers 0-5 and some to 10.

  • Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5
