This EYFS Subtracting within 20 Learning Activity enables children to consolidate their understanding of subtraction. Children need to count the first amount shown in images and then subtract a single-digit number. Children could be encouraged to subitise the first amount, for example if there are two rows of five, and see if they can recall the subtraction fact without the need to use equipment. Alternatively, a number line is featured to allow children to count back from the first amount.

It covers the following objectives for children in reception:

(M-21) Count objects, actions and sounds.

(M-24) Count beyond ten.

(M-28) Automatically recall number bonds for numbers 0-5 and some to 10.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number
  • Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5
  • Automatically recall (without reference to rhymes, counting or other aids) number bonds up to 5 (including subtraction facts) and some number bonds to 10, including double facts
