KS2 All Saints' Day Reading Comprehension is a short non-fiction reading text followed by five questions. The text explains what All Saints' Day is and how it began in the 8th century, when Pope Gregory III dedicated a chapel in Rome to all the saints. It also covers where the day falls between Halloween and All Souls' Day, and how families in countries such as France, Poland and Mexico mark it today.
The first questions check children's understanding of the text. They decide whether statements are true or false, unscramble key words such as saint and church, and match virtues like humility and courage to the actions that show them. The last two questions are more open. Children describe a time when they or someone they know showed one of the virtues, list good deeds people could do today and explain why it matters to remember people who did good.
The reading comprehension is written for KS2, so you can use it with any year group from Year 3 to Year 6. You could use it:
in an RE lesson about Christian festivals
as morning work around the 1st of November
after an assembly or collective worship about All Saints' Day
as a reading task in the first week back after October half-term
Children practise retrieving information from a non-fiction text and explaining their own ideas in writing.
