In this chapter, Joey describes the winter getting worse and how soldiers and horses are on food rations. The horses are struggling to pull the heavy guns as there is no food for strength and the mud and cold are causing them to get ill. Joey muses that while Herr Major and the other soldiers are doing what they can, it is the mud, lack of shelter and lack of food that are killing the horses off one by one.
