The Anglo-Saxons, Picts and Scots
Anglo-Saxons, Picts and Scots History at Home is a one-page activity sheet to send home to parents and carers at the start of the topic. It includes what children will be learning, great conversation starters, ideas to try at home, famous figures to explore and places to find out more, covering who the Anglo-Saxons, Picts and Scots were and how they shaped Britain.
Learning: who the Anglo-Saxons, Picts and Scots were, where they came from and how they shaped Britain, the seven kingdoms of the Heptarchy, everyday life and beliefs, and how these groups influenced our language, place names and early laws.
Conversation starters: questions such as "Can you spot any local place names that might come from Anglo-Saxon or Gaelic words?" and "How do you think people felt when new groups arrived in Britain?"
Ideas to try at home: a wattle-and-daub model, exploring place names on a map, the Ogham secret code (with an Ogham alphabet page), a simple Anglo-Saxon meal and natural dyes.
Famous figures: Athelstan, St Hilda of Whitby, Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians, and Raedwald, with dates and a line on each.
Books and websites: Beowulf, the British Museum's Sutton Hoo collection and BBC Bitesize.
Our History at Home resources sit alongside our history scheme. Send them home to parents and carers at the start of each topic to promote learning at home without it being a taxing homework-style resource. They also help parents build their own knowledge of the topic, so they can connect with what their child is learning in school.
Teach the full unit with our six Anglo-Saxons, Picts and Scots lessons.
