This KS1 Why Did the Gunpowder Plot Happen? PPT gives children an insight into religious change in early 17th century England. It covers the differences between Catholic and Protestant Christianity and how England kept changing between these religions under different monarchs. Children will discover how Queen Elizabeth I was tolerant, but King James I enforced strict new laws against Catholics. Children will learn how this made a group of Catholic men so angry they plotted to blow up Parliament.

There are engaging teaching slides featuring key information about both types of Christianity and their similarities and differences. Sprinkled throughout the PPT are enquiry questions that help children understand how Catholics felt when their religious freedom was taken away. These provide an opportunity to develop children's disciplinary knowledge and these questions are followed by a deeper question, which could be used to further challenge your children's historical understanding of religious conflict.

Pupils will also be able to find out how religious tolerance and freedom impacts on life today. Don't forget to check out the notes in the PowerPoint for any additional information.
