What's included in the Add or Subtract 1 or 2 Adult-Led Practical Activities resource and why is it useful?

Year 1 Add or Subtract 1 or 2 Adult-Led Practical Activities resource provides planning for setting up tasks using everyday classroom objects. There are two main activities which match the questions on the Varied Fluency resource. The second Why not try... page provides three extra opportunities for children to engage in the learning.

Each activity has Core, Support and Stretch questions which have been carefully designed to help you meet each child where they are at, to ensure progress for every child, not just the average child. These questions can be adapted to suit the needs of individual learners. Each practical activity covers how to represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 10.

This resource includes:

Add or Subtract 1 or 2 Practical Activities

• Activity 1: Change the Tower. Children add or take off 1 or 2 cubes and say the number sentence.

• Activity 2: Add or Subtract? Children act out short stories and decide whether to add or subtract.

You will need:

• interlocking cubes and number cards 0 to 10

• cards showing +1, +2, -1 and -2

• small toys, e.g. ducks, sea creatures, dinosaurs, cars or teddies, and mini whiteboards

Why not try…

• Spinner Moves - Pupils stand on a floor number line, spin a spinner and move forwards/back saying the number sentence.

• Caterpillar Grows - Children build a caterpillar from pom poms/cubes. They make it 1 or 2 longer/1 or 2 shorter.

• Pirate Treasure - A pirate adds 1 or 2 coins/takes 1 or 2 out of a treasure chest. Pupils say how many coins are in the chest.

How do our adult-led practical activities resources work?

Our Adult-Led Practical Activities resources work best alongside our teaching PowerPoints, which walk you through the whole lesson along with other lesson resources that you can find on our Add or Subtract 1 or 2 lesson page. It can be used alongside or in combination with the teaching PowerPoint.

These practical activities:

• Provide opportunities for teaching, to explore the concept and experience it through concrete resources.

• Are suitable for completion in small groups or whole class teaching.

• Are flexible with a choice of two activities and thinking questions that are ‘levelled’ for the teacher to use with different groups of children.

• Provide extension through the ‘Why not try…’ activities page – these could be done with the children or to set up in the continuous provision area whilst working with groups of children.
