What's included in the Addition Problems Continuous Provision resource and why is it useful?

Year 1 Addition Problems Continuous Provision resource includes planning for eight provision activities. The planning can be used to set up the activities in one or more provision areas, such as small world, construction or maths area. The activities have been designed for children to access independently as part of the lesson or as a follow-up. Each activity covers how to solve one-step problems involving addition.

This pack includes ideas for the following areas:

• Water area – find how many figures are in two boats altogether

• Sand area – dig up gems/coins and use a bond to 10 to find how many are hidden

• Maths area – find the total on a domino and match it to a number sentence

• Role play area – make and add up café orders

• Outdoor area – solve car park problems with toy cars

• Outdoor area - throw two beanbags at numbered targets and add the scores.

• Fine motor area – fill two pots with pompoms and find the total

• Creative area – provide pizza templates and two types of toppings to add together

How do our continuous provision resources work?

Our Continuous Provision resources work best alongside our teaching PowerPoints, which walk you through the whole lesson along with other lesson resources that you can find on our Addition Problems lesson page. Children can use the activities to flexibly access their learning to improve fluency or to deepen and apply their knowledge as part of their reasoning and problem solving.

The Continuous Provision activities:

• Can be used at different points throughout the lesson.

• Can be used alongside the Varied Fluency and Reasoning and Problem Solving worksheets to provide meaningful opportunities for practice.

• Can be used to revisit the activities to consolidate their understanding, giving them the time and space to really focus and deepen their thinking and reasoning skills, which supports mastery of the concept.

• Support observation and assessment as children apply their learning independently through play.
