What's included in the Part-Whole Model Continuous Provision resource and why is it useful?

Year 1 Part-Whole Model Continuous Provision resource includes planning for eight provision activities. The planning can be used to set up the activities in one or more provision areas, such as small world, construction or maths area. The activities have been designed for children to access independently as part of the lesson or as a follow-up. Each activity covers how to identify and represent numbers in part-whole models using objects and pictorial representations.

This pack includes ideas for the following areas:

• Maths area – fill a part-whole mat using number cards and counters

• Maths area – use gems or counters and allow children to draw their own part-whole models

• Small World area –use a play farm with a barn or field to create the different areas

• Role Play area – share café cakes between two plates

• Outdoor area –bean bag hula hoop game, with a big dice

• Outdoor area – fill a giant chalk part-whole model

• Water area – scoop ducks into two tubs and count each part

• Construction area – build a two-colour tower and show the parts

How do our continuous provision resources work?

Our Continuous Provision resources work best alongside our teaching PowerPoints, which walk you through the whole lesson along with other lesson resources that you can find on our Part-Whole Model lesson page. Children can use the activities to flexibly access their learning to improve fluency or to deepen and apply their knowledge as part of their reasoning and problem solving.

The Continuous Provision activities:

• Can be used at different points throughout the lesson.

• Can be used alongside the Varied Fluency and Reasoning and Problem Solving worksheets to provide meaningful opportunities for practice.

• Can be used to revisit the activities to consolidate their understanding, giving them the time and space to really focus and deepen their thinking and reasoning skills, which supports mastery of the concept.

• Support observation and assessment as children apply their learning independently through play.
