This Year 1 and Year 2 Rise and Read resource includes four reading activities focused on the life of Walter Tull, one of the earliest Black professional footballers and one of the first Black officers in the British army. It is suitable for use in Years 1 and 2 and could be displayed on the whiteboard as early morning work, used in reading or PSHE lessons or even as a stimulus in assemblies. However you choose to use it, children will not only sharpen their reading skills but also learn more about this pioneering man.
The pack includes an information text, a newspaper article, an image and a diary entry. These lead to questions which focus on a variety of reading skills: retrieval, vocabulary, purpose, prediction and inference. There is also an assessment-style question with a focus on the meaning of vocabulary.
This resource does not require any printing, as it has been specially designed to be displayed on the whiteboard.
