Challenge pupils' understanding of mass problem solving with this Year 1 Compare Mass Reasoning and Problem Solving resource.

With six questions scaffolded with images, complete with answers for immediate feedback, this resource is ideal for use in class or at home and is designed to give pupils the chance to apply what they have learned about comparing mass, ultimately deepening their understanding and building confidence.

To meet the needs of your class, this resource is differentiated to three levels of challenge:

Developing: Using Number bonds to ten and one type of non-standard unit. Includes images in the statements. No more than 5 more or 5 less. Two out of three objects are equal.

Expected: Using addition and subtraction within 20 and various non-standard units. Statements in words only. Using a given number of units. More than one object may be needed.

Greater Depth: Using various non-standard units. Not all weights given explicitly, requiring half and double knowledge. The weight of an object is sometimes doubled or halved. Combinations of objects are needed to find the answer. Not all masses given explicitly.

Curriculum Objectives

  • Compare, describe and solve practical problems for: lengths and heights [for example, long/short, longer/shorter, tall/short, double/half]; mass/weight [for example, heavy/light, heavier than, lighter than]; capacity and volume [for example, full/empty, more than, less than, half, half full, quarter]; Time [for example, quicker, slower, earlier, later]
  • Measure and begin to record: lengths and heights; mass/weight; capacity and volume; time (hours, minutes, seconds)
