What's included in the Compare Numbers Adult-Led Practical Activities resource and why is it useful?

Year 1 Compare Numbers Adult-Led Practical Activities resource provides planning for setting up tasks using everyday classroom objects. There are two main activities which match the questions on the Varied Fluency resource. The second Why not try... page provides three extra opportunities for children to engage in the learning.

Each activity has Core, Support and Stretch questions which have been carefully designed to help you meet each child where they are at, to ensure progress for every child, not just the average child. These questions can be adapted to suit the needs of individual learners. Each practical activity covers how to compare numbers and use the language less than, greater than and equal to.

This resource includes:

Compare Numbers Practical Activities

• Activity 1: make the inequality symbol, use card

• Activity 2: roll dice to create cube towers, insert correct inequality symbol

You will need:

• number cards, plastic numbers or wooden discs, some card

• dice and stacking blocks/cubes

Why not try…

• using a sock puppet to ‘eat’ the greatest number

• using number discs or number cards, turn over and put the correct inequality symbol in

• using pots with shells or other small objects, count out and insert the inequality correct symbol

How do our adult-led practical activities resources work?

Our Adult-Led Practical Activities resources work best alongside our teaching PowerPoints, which walk you through the whole lesson along with other lesson resources that you can find on our Compare Numbers lesson page. It can be used alongside or in combination with the teaching PowerPoint.

These practical activities:

• Provide opportunities for teaching, to explore the concept and experience it through concrete resources.

• Are suitable for completion in small groups or whole class teaching.

• Are flexible with a choice of two activities and thinking questions that are ‘levelled’ for the teacher to use with different groups of children.

• Provide extension through the ‘Why not try…’ activities page – these could be done with the children or to set up in the continuous provision area whilst working with groups of children.
