What's included in the Order Objects and Numbers Adult-Led Practical Activities resource and why is it useful?

Year 1 Order Objects and Numbers Adult-Led Practical Activities resource provides planning for setting up tasks using everyday classroom objects. There are two main activities which match the questions on the Varied Fluency resource. The second Why not try... page provides three extra opportunities for children to engage in the learning.

Each activity has Core, Support and Stretch questions which have been carefully designed to help you meet each child where they are at, to ensure progress for every child, not just the average child. These questions can be adapted to suit the needs of individual learners. Each practical activity covers how to identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representation, and use most and least.

This resource includes:

Order Objects and Numbers Practical Activities

• Activity 1: Caterpillar Ordering - make three bead caterpillars and order them from fewest beads to most.

• Activity 2: Order Our Names - count the letters in each name and order them from fewest to most.

You will need:

• pipe cleaners and beads

• whiteboards and pens, name cards or letter tiles

• space for children to stand in order

Why not try…

• Build and Order Towers - order three cube towers from shortest (fewest cubes) to tallest (most cubes).

• Skittles Knock-Down - order three skittle scores from fewest to most.

• Number Card Order - order three number cards from smallest to greatest.

How do our adult-led practical activities resources work?

Our Adult-Led Practical Activities resources work best alongside our teaching PowerPoints, which walk you through the whole lesson along with other lesson resources that you can find on our Order Objects and Numbers lesson page. It can be used alongside or in combination with the teaching PowerPoint.

These practical activities:

• Provide opportunities for teaching, to explore the concept and experience it through concrete resources.

• Are suitable for completion in small groups or whole class teaching.

• Are flexible with a choice of two activities and thinking questions that are ‘levelled’ for the teacher to use with different groups of children.

• Provide extension through the ‘Why not try…’ activities page – these could be done with the children or to set up in the continuous provision area whilst working with groups of children.
